I’ve been hitting the gym hard for a few months now. I have to admit that i haven’t always done that. As a matter of fact, I never used to go to the gym. Working out was something that I always wanted to do but I was never able to stick to a work out.

I went through countless phases where I would be getting fit and then I’d drop it all. I’d quit working out, quit eating healthy. I was sick of it. Getting in shape was just this huge chore that I didn’t want to do.

Once this pandemic hit, I started getting lazier and lazier by the day. My belly was packing on weight and just being over all unhealthy. I wasn’t happy with way I looked and felt about myself. Something needed to change.

One day I decided enough was enough and started researching and looking for ways to get in shape with my lifestyle. I found some things that do work, some that don’t, and figured out a way to consistently work out and take care of my body

Its all in your head

I’ve said this so many times but it still reigns so much truth “If you want to change your life, you must first change your mind”

Everything you do, you do because of your mentality. If you don’t learn to take control of your mind, your mind will control you. Getting fit is hard. You are going to have to change the way you feel about putting in the work. Change the way you cook, control your unhealthy cravings.

This is not an easy task for most. It was hard for me to get into the right mind set. It’s something I am still working on constantly. I listen to a lot of self help videos on YouTube. Its full of great motivational speeches. A couple of my favorite speakers are Eric Thomas and Less Brown. I highly recommend you start listening to these right away.

You are what you feed your mind. If you feed your mind negativity, your life will be negative. If you feed it positivity, you will start to see more positive in your life.

Why do you want to work out?

Sit down and really think this one out. Grab a pen and a piece of paper. Write down all of the reasons you want to get in shape.

Don’t just write because you want to be skinny or you want to be pretty. People are skinny and pretty to impress other people. Your better than that. Do not start getting in shape for the world. This is something you have to do for yourself.

Maybe you want to get fit for your kids. Its important for parents to show our future generation what a healthy lifestyle is. Also, the healthier you are the easier it will be to keep up with those kiddos.

Perhaps you want to get in shape for your mental health. Healthy body, healthy mind.

My original why was because I’m going to be getting married soon. But now I go to the gym everyday because it makes me feel good. It makes me happy and I love feeling strong. Find a why so powerful that it will push you to stick to a work out

Schedule it and make it a priority.

Make working out as much of part of your routine as doing the dishes or going grocery shopping. You make time for so many things. You can make time for this. Self care should always be a priority. We can’t pour from an empty cup. And don’t feel guilty about making time for this. I know i did at first but your family needs a healthy mom.

Be sure to add it to your planner. Write down what sort of work out you’ll be doing. Its easier to complete something when its all written down for you. If you don’t have a planner and are interested in starting one, check out this post.

Make it convenient

The harder it is to do something, the less likely you will do it. Make sure you make your work outs as convenient as possible. Hit the gym either on your way to or from work. Have your gym gear set up and ready to go the night before.

Short on time? Plan an at home work out. 15 minutes is better than nothing. Pintrest is always full of great ideas. Click here to see one of my favorite quick at home work outs

Have Fun!!!

This one is so important. If you’re not enjoying what your doing, you wont do it as well. If you don’t enjoy your work outs, you’re not going to push youself as hard. Chances are, you’ll eventually give up and quit doing it. Been there, done that.

Find a work out that YOU enjoy. You like to run? Awesome! Run your freaking legs off. Don’t like running? Me either, try something different.

Maybe you like to dance, try a zumba class. I personally love weight lifting and its what I do for just about every work out. Another favorite of mine is boxing. Its great after a tough day.

Just find what works for you. Don’t be afraid to try new things. Everything you ever dreamed of is on the other side of everything your afraid of.

Get an accountability partner

I recently started falling behind on getting my work outs in. So I asked one of my daughters if they wanted to do a kick boxing video with me. Of course, she was totally in and one of the other kiddos joined, too! It was so much fun that they asked if they can do it again tomorrow.

I told them that I’ve been struggling a bit and I would love to work out with them any chance I can get!

I also confined in my fiancé that I was struggling and he cheers me on every day. He always has suggestions for something new I could try.

Set small achievable goals

Then smash the shit out of those goals, than make new goals. Repeat.

Make sure you set a goal for yourself that you know you can do. It can be something like, cutting out pop or losing 2 pound by next Friday. Start training yourself to discipline you.

Slowly start making your goals a bit more challenging. Keep raising the bar. Don’t forget to reward yourself for your accomplishments. Remember though “Treat yourself, don’t cheat yourself”

Make progress, not excuses

We all have excuses and reasons to not do something. Most of our excuses are bullshit anyways and we use them to do what we want now, rather than working toward what we want later.

Every step forward is a step in the right direction. Don’t let your excuses get in your way. Keep looking at all the progress you have made. Do not look at how far you have left to go. And never give up. You got this

  1. This is so good! I have struggled since we went into quarantine in March. I am most successful when I have someone to work out with. My husband and I were doing a boot camp together every morning, and I was killing it! We haven’t been back since March, and now we can’t afford it. I think I need to change my mindset and maybe convince him to do something with me at home. Thanks… I needed the motivation.
